Sylvia Plath is revered as one of the great American poet. According to the unknown author of the “Sylvia Plath“ Biography page for poetry foundation .org states that “Plath is one of the most dynamic and admired poets of the twentieth      century”(poetryfoundation.org). Not only did Plath write poems, she was also a novelist, and short-story writer. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Plath studied at Smith College and Newnham College.

Plath excelled in her studies while attending college, eventually becoming the guest editor for the magazine Mademoiselle. Long before receiving acclaim as a poet and writer, Plath as a young child would publish her first poem and win awards for her paintings. According to the Biography page from coloumbiagraingers.org states “she married fellow poet Ted Hughes in 1956; they lived together in the United States and then England, and had two children, Frieda and Nicholas” (coloumbiagrangers.org). Suffered from depression for much of her adult life, and in 1963 she committed suicide. Controversy continues to surround the events of her life and death, as well as her writing and legacy.

 

Plath is credited with advancing the genre of confessional poetry, and is best known for her two published collections, The Colossus and Other Poems and Ariel. According to the unknown author of the “Sylvia Plath“ Biography page for poets.org states that ”In 1982, she won a posthumous Pulitzer Prize for The Collected Poems” (poets.org). She also wrote The Bell Jar, a semi-autobiographical novel published shortly before her death.
